I can’t believe that we’ve been at this homeschool preschool thing for 2 months already! I feel like I’m finally getting into a rhythm of things, especially the lesson planning portion.
My boys have been really enjoying preschool at home, and I have also been loving that I have things already planned for each day. It takes a bit of work to plan ahead, but it makes each day a lot easier!
You can check out the units I have planned out for this school year here.

Feelings and Emotions
This week we will be learning about feelings and emotions. I think this is a very important topic for littles!
Toddlers and preschoolers are often known for their temper tantrums, because they have yet to learn what their emotions are and how to properly express those feelings.
Though we won’t go super deep on feelings and emotions this week, we will be working on identifying feelings. And also talk a little bit about how we can deal with some of the more difficult emotions like anger and sadness.

Lesson Plan for Feelings and Emotions for Homeschool Preschool
Activities for Feelings and Emotions
Day 1:
Emotions With Play Doh
Create different emotions on these face place mats using play doh. It’s a great fine motor activity as well!
These face place mats are available in the lesson plan download.
Day 2: Alphabet Practice
This week, we will be learning the letter E, and also be reviewing and practicing the letters we’ve learned up till now.
My son actually is quite familiar with all the capital letters, but still needs to practice identifying his lower-case letters. So I plan on doing a matching activity using large kraft paper and circle label stickers, to help him practice matching capital to lower-case letters A-E.
Day 3: Emotions Board Game
I found this emotions board game on Life Over C’s and thought it would be fun! We haven’t really played board games with our boys yet, so it should be interesting. You can download the free printable board game here.
Day 4: Toilet Paper Roll Faces
Yay for another toilet paper roll activity! I mentioned before that I have a collection of toilet paper rolls in case we need them for some activities, and I always get super excited to use them! I’m dorky like that 😉
To create these toilet paper roll faces, stick googly eyes on toilet paper rolls and draw on noses and mouths with a marker. We use these googly eyes which are great because you just peel off the backing and stick it on. No need for glue!
You can create one for each feeling/emotion that you are discussing with your child this week.
I also saw this activity on Instagram, and thought this could also be a fun option. Here is how ours turned out:
Day 5: Categorizing Feelings Faces
Download and cut out the feelings faces and categorize them onto the corresponding feelings mat.
Optional Video About Feelings and Emotions
I always enjoyed the Daniel Tiger episode about what to do when you get mad. “If you feel so mad and you want to roar. Take a deep breath and count to four!”
I think it’s a very simple strategy that children (and adults!) can do to calm themselves when they feel mad. I plan on watching it with my son this week.
I believe they have this episode available for free on Prime, but here’s the episode on Youtube as well.
Books about Feelings and Emotions
The Feelings Book by Todd Parr
As with his many other books, Todd Parr writes using simple but relatable words which is perfect for young children.
One of Those Days by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Rebecca Doughty
There are many “those days” that we all go through, and it’s okay!
The Great Big Book of Feelings by Mary Hoffman and Ros Asquith
This book is definitely the most wordy out of the bunch. It covers many different feelings and provides different examples of when someone may feel that way. It’s a great book to get a conversation started and talk about feelings.
The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too! by Mo Willems
Short and cute, this book highlights just three feelings: happy, angry, and sad.
Breathing Makes It Better by Christopher Willard and Wendy O’Leary
Breathing is so very important! This book is a great way to teach young children about mindfulness, and breathing through various emotions that may be difficult for little ones to process.
Grumpy Monkey by Suzanne Lang
Love this book! Some days, we can be grumpy for no good reason. But it makes us feel better just having say that it’s okay to feel that way.
Little Monkey Calms Down by Michael Dahl
Cute and simple book that is super relatable for littles! It gives some strategies like taking a deep breath and cuddling with your favorite blanket that helps us calm down when we feel upset.
The Way I Feel by Janan Cain
The colors are very vibrant in this book and the facial expressions are very clear. It is easy for preschoolers to identify most of these emotions just by looking through the pictures.
The Color Monster by Anna Llenas
I love that this book connects colors with emotions. It makes feelings and emotions a bit easier to understand especially for preschoolers.
Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis
This book goes through lots of different things that can happen in a young child’s life and the emotions that go with each of the events.
Bible Verse: Mark 12: 30-31
This is a longer memory verse, so last week we focused on the first verse, and this next week we will be learning the second verse.
This song has definitely been helpful in memorizing the first verse.

This is such a great theme unit! It is very important to teach children how to manage and understand their feelings!
Lessons on feelings and emotional health are just as important as math and science. It is good to see these lessons available for young learners.
