Best Tip for Surviving Motherhood: Self-Care for Moms

My Best Tip for Surviving Motherhood

Here is my secret: SELF-CARE

Being busy moms that we are, we are usually running around taking care of everyone around us that we oftentimes neglect ourselves. Self-care for moms doesn’t have to take a very long time, but I believe that taking even a few minutes everyday doing something that helps you feel rejuvenated, is very important to our own sanity, in turn for our family too.

Those days or weeks that I neglect myself, I notice that I get frustrated and more easily lose my temper with my kids. But let’s be real, most often it’s my poor husband that has to deal with an unhappy Rebecca. That’s not fair.

Obviously self-care means different things to everyone. Here are some of my best tips on self-care for moms. Hopefully reading through my tips will give you a place to start!

1. Do Something That Makes You Feel Refreshed

Some people say that they have to run everyday to clear their head and feel sane. For me, it’s a hot shower. Especially during those first few weeks postpartum, the only thing that helped me feel refreshed after a long day of nursing the baby and changing poopy diapers, was a nice hot shower.

Every evening, I would get either my mom or my husband to watch the baby and I would take a nice long hot shower. It felt so good to just wash off the grime from the day, and it was just a few precious minutes to myself that I could be alone in silence. Any other introverts out there relate to this?

The added benefit for me, especially during the first few days and weeks is that I also spent time massaging my breasts under hot water to help prevent clogged ducts and prevent mastitis. (I suffered from mastitis after my first son, and I was paranoid that I would get it again the second time. I was very diligent in doing everything I could to prevent it.)

2. Do Something That Makes You Feel Beautiful

I love skincare. I don’t have time to do a mask every single day, but no matter how busy I am, I do take the time to do my skincare routine every morning and night.

Check out this post on my favorite Korean skincare products that you can get from Amazon. All of these products are very affordable as well!

During the week if I’m going out, I try to spend at least 5 minutes to make myself look presentable. Not that I really care about what other people think (sorry, not sorry), but that I feel good about myself when I’m out in public.

On the weekends, I usually get my husband to watch the kids while I get ready to go out, and I can do a full face of makeup. This really does help boost my mood, even when I’m not feeling super amazing.

I also make sure to paint my nails at least once every couple weeks. Having nice nails makes me feel more put together.

And lastly, I’ve been more intentional about wearing clothes that aren’t super shabby even if I’m staying at home. I will admit, I am a bit of a hoarder and can get pretty attached to clothes. This means I have clothes that I wear on a regular basis that’s like over 10 years old. Don’t judge me!

But let just say, it’s not a pretty look. I’ve been trying to get rid of things that don’t make me feel my best and getting some comfy essentials even if it’s just for wearing around the house. It’s helped me feel a lot about myself.

3. Have a Hobby

I feel like since I’ve had kids, my life has been consumed by them. I love them to death, but there are times when I feel like I’ve lost touch with a part of myself.

Ever since I was young, I loved art and creating things. About 6 months after my first son was born, I started hand-lettering and calligraphy. I found a lot of free tutorials and worksheets online, and bought a few pens that people recommended and got started. It was therapeutic for me to create something and also have a hobby to call my own apart from my son, apart from being a mom.

Using my hobby, I recently started an Etsy shop called Blessed Bec Designs! I make customized wooden tags which are perfect for party favors and especially for Christmas stockings! I can also do custom signs with fun and inspirational quotes. Please send me an email if you’re interested! Check out my shop here!

  1. Saturday nights I take a bath and while it’s filling up I clean my bathroom. I enjoy feeling productive and then I unwind and watch an episode of “This is Us’ on my phone while I exfoliate . I slather on lotion and go to bed. I love how my skin feels in the morning!
