Due to the pandemic, I unexpectedly found myself a homeschooling mom. You can read about more about our story in our post on our educational philosophy and get our free printable weekly themed unit plans here.
We were all a bit disappointed that my son couldn’t go to a regular preschool this year. So I really wanted to make his first year of homeschooling a positive experience for him (and for me).
For my son’s first day of Homeschool preschool, I wanted to start off the year with a fun activity.
I put together this School Supplies Scavenger Hunt as a way to introduce him to his new school supplies that he will be using throughout the school year.
Materials Needed:
- School Supplies Scavenger Hunt Free Printable
- Crayons
- Coloring Pencils
- Scissors (I love these for my 2 yo and 4 yo)
- Glue
- Notebook
- Pencil (I love these for toddlers and preschoolers)
How to Play School Supplies Scavenger Hunt
Prep
Hide all the school supplies in a room.
Ideally, if you have a separate room where you homeschool, you can do this prep portion the night before.
Or if you have a backyard, it could be nice to do the scavenger hunt outside as well.
Since we do not have a separate “classroom” in our apartment, we actually did this scavenger hunt in his bedroom to keep it contained. I asked him to wait in the living room while I quickly hid all of the school supplies.
Share Instructions
Initially, I was a little worried that my 3 year-old wouldn’t really understand the concept of a scavenger hunt, but since he had gone on an Easter Egg Hunt earlier that year, he got the hang of it quickly.
And my 1 year old also joined in as well–well, he was mostly just intrigued by the coloring pencils 🙂
Step 1
I showed him the School Supplies Scavenger Hunt sheet (to download, scroll to the bottom of this post). We talked through each of the items, and discussed how we would be using these supplies for homeschool preschool this year.
And like I mentioned before, since we were all disappointed that he couldn’t go to an actual preschool, I tried to make it sound extra exciting that we could do preschool at home.
Step 2
We placed the Scavenger Hunt sheet on a desk, and we searched for one of the school supplies. When he found one, he would bring it back to the desk and color in the item that he found.
Step 3
He repeated that step until he found all of the school supplies.
Shopping For School Supplies
Before I end this post, I thought I would share where I get my school supplies. I am budget-conscious but I also do like quality products.
Amazon
I love Amazon and it’s a really convenient to have things delivered right to your doorstep. I have definitely did a ton of shopping on Amazon over the years, especially as a mom of littles, and of course during this past year.
I feel like most of you probably have Amazon Prime, but if you don’t, you can use this link to get a 30-day free trial!
Target
Prices on Amazon can be really good when you purchase in bulk or if you subscribe and save. However, for school supplies, I found that Target has really great prices especially if you take advantage of back to school sales.
Last year, during the back to school sales, there were loads of gems in the dollar section where I found lots of fun stickers, puzzles, and calendars that I found super useful throughout the past year.
Dollar Store
I mentioned that I am budget-conscious so I can’t forget about the dollar store! I usually go to the Dollar Tree, and they have loads of affordable supplies that are also good quality.
I found my favorite wrapping paper tape and crayons there for just a dollar each! And I usually get birthday cards from there as well, since they’re just a dollar instead of $3-$5 at other stores.
